Our vegetal candles

After some research we have chosen for rapeseed wax to make the olefació candles. Why? As far as we are concerned, it is the best ecological choice .

 Most of the candles you find in the shops are made of paraffin. Paraffin is a product from the petrochemical industry. Burning a paraffin candle, you produce some pollutant substances. Obvious, not so good for you nor for the environment.

For a number of years, natural waxes are being used. Soy wax is widely used. Although it is also a natural and vegetal wax, it has some disadvantages.  The last years the growth of soy is enormous. The quantities produced in Europe are rather small compared to those imported from e.g. South America. In some areas, this enormous growth of soy has caused a serious disruption of the ecosystem. Forests, rainforests, savannas,… have been and still are destructed. Another problem is that a large part of the soy is genetically modified, engineered. There is a lot of  discussion going on about GM crops. We prefer not to use it. Hence our choice for rapeseed wax.

Rapeseed wax is a wax made of rapeseed oil. Rapeseed  is being grown in Europe in a sustainable way. It is of course, vegetable and biodegradable. It contains neither genetically modified substances nor toxic substances.

Although rapeseed wax is not so easy to work with, we are happy with the  results we have. We combined the natural rapeseed wax with a wick made of cotton braided together with paper. The wick contains no metals and is not treated with chemical products. For the scented candles we only use 100% essential oils. No synthetic perfumes, no additives! The glass is recycled from bottles. Once empty you can easily rinse it and re-use it.
